Christmas Shopping Madness

So did you go out shopping on Black Friday? My hat is off to you that braved the crowded stores to get just the right gifts for those you love but I take that hat off while I rest comfortably at home and sip my egg nog, happy that I am not one of the crowd members you must wrestle that iPad from.

Shopping Madness I tried shopping the traditional way a couple of years back. I was called names, pushed by a ten year old and I’m pretty sure I was sexually molested by a 70 year old, blue haired lady with a cane all while trying to find my way through the crowds of a department store to buy a television that had a desirable sale price. After leaving the 70 year old lady my phone number and feeling happy that I made a new friend, I promptly promised myself to never do that again. I mean, Myrtle never did call me, after all I and her cane had been through too.

Tis the season to be jolly! But for mad crowds of shoppers with bargains flashing in their eyes, there is little to be jolly about if someone takes their shopping prize before they can shove it into their cart. Shopping can truly be a frightening thing as the video below will demonstrate.

I don’t know about you folks, but crazed scenes like that kinda dampens my Christmas cheer. Play all the wonderful old Christmas carols you want but starring down a 250 lb bull of a woman with her eyes on a coffee maker for $19.95 at three in the morning is just unnatural and the stuff of nightmares.

But It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way

Friends, we live in an age where you can do all your Christmas shopping from the comfort of your home. Why on earth would anyone risk being trampled to death in a department store when everyone on your shopping list can be taken care of with ease right here?

Nucky Thompson :: A Different Kind Of Dangerous

Have you been watching HBO’s Boardwalk Empire? I have and can highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys period crime drama, specifically gangster dramas. The series is centered around Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson, Treasurer of Atlantic City, during the 20′s era of prohibition and vice. Interesting enough, the character of Nucky Thompson is based on a real life Atlantic City tycoon named Enoch ‘Nucky’ Johnson. The red carnation-wearing prohibition boss is beautifully played by Steve Buscemi who once again, proves to be one of the most interesting and remarkable character actors of our day. Steve Buscemi is one of those actors that no matter what he’s doing, you know it’s worth the price to see him do it because it’s always going to be good.

Nucky Thompson is an extremely complex character. He’s highly intelligent, ruthless in his business dealings and also in some of his personal dealings, but not in a violent way usually. It’s obvious that Nucky takes care of his relationships and he likes being the one who makes people happy and satisfied. Politically, he plays the game better than anyone, playing each side of an issue against each other while being the voice of action to both.

Nucky Thompson may not be the kind of tough guy Al Capone was but he had his own way of exacting his kind of justice and often it was worse than anything Capone could do to you. One thing is for sure, you didn’t want to be the enemy of Nucky Thompson. It’s that kind of slick ruthlessness that I think makes him so interesting. On one hand he is quite warm-hearted and caring. On the other hand, he can definitely be a terrible foe. That’s what gave me the idea for my latest Nucky Thompson tee shirt design.

Face paint is pretty cool. There is always some sort of festival or art show going on in the town that I live in and with that is always some form of face painting for the kids, mostly. They will usually paint simple flowers or butterflies on the darling kids faces and before today, that’s all I thought of the art of face painting. I was wrong though as this collection of extravagant and unusual face paint images will show. Check them out.

New Heisenberg Shirt Breaks Bad

Heisenberg, AKA Walter White is certainly the danger, something that wife, Skyler should come to recognize. I love this scene in the series where Mr. White lets Skyler have it right in the kisser.

Skyler: …admit you’re in danger.

Walt : Who are you looking at right now? Who is it you think you see? So freakin’ awesome to see Walt put Skyler in her place because she’s always so controlling in the home. Nope, can’t stand her!

I love this scene so much. Walter gives Skyler just a glimpse of how he’s Breaking Bad and for a moment there, I thought Heisenberg was going to be unleashed all over her. She deserves it, the little bi…ahem. Heh, what do you guys think? Is Skyler a hero or a villain to you? I think I made my feelings towards her fairly clear.

Heisenberg is definitely one of my favorite designs in the series. The stylized Heisenberg logo looks really cool and the words, I Am The Danger are so fitting beneath. This is a great tee for any Breaking Bad fan.

Top Ten Scary Movies For Halloween

Top 10 Scary Movies

Well Halloween weekend is among us and for me there is no enjoying Halloween without scary movies. Now, I know there are lots of blogs out there this weekend blogging about scary movies, I myself have read many such entries in hopes to find a new gem to rent. With this in mind, I know these won’t be everyone’s favorites but for me, they are the ones that truly give me the willies if watching them alone in a dark house.

10. Paranormal Activity

Being a fan of ghost hunting and television shows dealing with that makes this a great movie for me. The scenes that capture demon activity are as exciting as they are dreadful. You would think knowing that the scenes are made up just like any other movie would detract from the realistic nature of the movie but for me it’s still pretty creepy.

9. The Signal

There’s something about the atmosphere in this film that gets to me. A frantic and wild search for sanity and calm that seems so elusive to the heroes of this film. I like it because it relies more on the actors to perpetuate the disturbing nature of the story rather than being a simple gore-fest and it’s has the gritty feel of an independent release.

8. High Tension

This is a straight-up slasher film that’s got a ton of dread mixed into it and a surprise ending that’s pretty cool. The kill scenes are the kind that makes you wince a bit but I guess I like this the most because of the suspense it adequately applies. It’s not really a scary feeling while watching but it does bring me to the edge of my seat hoping the heroine survives.

7. Pet Sematary

An oldie but a goodie, Pet Sematary is a Stephen King classic horror film. For me, the hide under the cover scene is when Zelda is sick in bed and her little sister attempts to feed her. Yikes, that gives me the willies!

6. Amityville Horror (2005)

I liked the remake a lot more than I figured I would. I had seen all the other Amityville Horror movies before and wasn’t really expecting much out of this one but there are lots of what I call ‘scare-jump scenes’ in this remake that makes it one of those films I don’t want to watch alone. Scare-jump scenes, are those scenes when you know something is about to happen, you expect it and brace for it but then somehow the director is able to surprise you with it anyway, making you jump out of your skin. If you haven’t seen this one, I think you might like it. It’s a lot of fun.

5. 28 Days Later

Zombie movies have always been my favorite kind of horror flicks. I know there are Romero devotees who would lambaste me for not including a classic in this list but for my money, 28 Days Later does a fine job of bringing back the zombie genre and more importantly, giving our first glimpse at ‘fast zombies’ which just put slow zombies to shame. Fast zombies are much scarier.

4. Quarantine

This is an English remake of the movie REC. Both movies are really very good and frightening but personally, I prefer Quarantine just because I don’t much care for subtitles. There’s tons of ‘scare-jumps’ in this one and you can’t help but cringing in some scenes. Jitter-cam first person perspective storytelling in it’s finest!

3. The Shining

Stephen King’s The Shining is masterful horror fare directed by the genius Stanley Kubrick. The film is thick with atmosphere and dread which sets up some of the most horrific, nightmarish scenes ever put to film. It’s a classic so you won’t see many of the ‘scare-jump’ scenes in this movie but for a creepy story projected by the great Jack Nicholson, it’s a real piece of work. This movie is why the world creeps when they see twin little girls.

2. The Exorcist

I realize that this movie is at the top of everyone’s list and I struggled with that for quite a while but for me The Exorcist is an almost perfect horror movie. It mixes imagery and sound masterfully to make the viewer sink into a pit of darkness that I haven’t seen from any other movie. Half the time I’m trying to figure out these quirky characters while the other half I’m flinching in horror from sounds that surely must be of the devil. Watch the directors cut to see things that just ain’t right.

1. The Blair Witch Project

I can hear the comments already. “Dude, The Blair Witch Project? That’s your number one? Really?” I say, “Yes, really it is!” I made this list a little different than others in that I wanted to include movies that successfully make me not want to watch them alone in a dark house. Most horror movies are not like this. They offer a few chills, they throw in one or two scare-jump scenes but they don’t make me think twice before watching them if I’m alone.

The Blair Witch Project is at number one because there are scenes in it that actually turn me into a little six year old girl. Another film that masterfully uses the jitter-cam first persons perspective and crazy audio to fill my heart with dread. The Blair Witch Project is an ultimate example of the fact that it’s what you can’t see that’s a million times more frightening than what you can see.

Horror purists can hate me, but there you have it.

Dolls Are Scary :: Examining My Pediophobia

Halloween looms ahead this month and so my mind has been on things that creep me out. I am not normally afraid of much of anything but I do have a few things that fill me with dread. I’m not a big fan of spiders, I don’t know if you could say I’m afraid of them. I mean, I’m not afraid to kill one if I see it but if one is on me and I can’t find it I will shriek like a little girl until I know it’s off me.

One other thing creeps me out about as much as spiders and that’s dolls. Not every doll bothers me, mind you. It’s those dolls with eyes that look like they could be real that freak me out the most. You know, those old dolls who’s eyelids would open and close when some evil cousin would happily wave it in your face to hear you shriek like a little girl.

My grandmother had a doll collection. They were all very old, probably antique dolls with those freaky eyes. She displayed them all together like some sort of evil doll posse on a set of shelves in her living room. I couldn’t help but feel every one of those soulless eyes staring at me, watching my every move. ((shudders)) I looked it up, the fear of dolls is clinically called, pediophobia.

In the spirit of Halloween I’ve collected a number of scary doll images I thought were interesting. I’ve never seen dolls like this before. They are apparently created to give one the creeps and in my opinion, the artist of these wicked creations hit the nail on the head.

Yeah, there you go with the eye action and the scratches and dirty face adds to the creepy in my opinion. Antique dolls, especially distressed ones, are the worst!

Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this thing in a nightmare before. Long black hair with eyes blacked out is just not right, man. It’s not right!

This one is obviously one of those scary dolls made to creep you out. The blank stare gets me even more than the dead patina on the skin and skeletal teeth.

Clowns don’t bother me. They are neither funny nor scary. Well, that is until you make a doll into a clown with zombie eyes and hell teeth.

Make fun of me all you want but I can’t look at this image for more than a few seconds without feeling all wigged out. Go away, evil doll head!

Aww, isn’t this little tyke just adorable? I’m pretty sure that Satan must have a special room in hell for the sick freak that came up with this nightmare.

Really? I mean, did you have to go there with the horrifically reconstructed mouth and oh, the white eyeball in one socket is a nice touch as well. I mean, come on! What little girl is going to play with this thing? No, don’t tell me. I don’t even wanna know!

Well isn’t that sweet? It’s a nightmarish dollepede. I should get one for my niece for Christmas. “Here, little Chrissy, something from Uncle Tommy to keep you awake for the rest of your precious life.” I don’t think so.

Yeah, see how the soulless black eyes are just haunting? I means there’s nothing super scary about this doll except that some sick freak painted the eyes black and now it’s an icon from some kind of horror movie.

Last but not least is sweet little baby Jezzie, zombie vampire of the undead.

I’m from Alabama so that pretty much makes me a Tide fan. For most folks in Alabama, the love for the Crimson Tide is something that’s handed down from generation to generation but honestly folks all over the nation root for the Tide because they are consistently the team to beat in the SEC conference. No other team in the conference has as many rivals. In fact, you could easily say that every team in the SEC is a rival to the Tide. That kind of competitive standing is what sets the team apart for college football fans as it always has.

It’s fairly easy to see the humor and team spirit in this t-shirt design. The Joseph Ducreux self portrait is one that’s familiar with the Archaic Rap internet meme. A Fortunate Typhoon

I can’t possibly be alone in realizing that one of life’s most precious treasures is suddenly finding music that speaks to you from some deep level you ever knew existed before. Do you know what I mean? You are happily going about your life and listening to a radio or some awkward mix-tape and then you hear it. The song coils around the furthest reaches of your soul and the music makes your heart swell with it’s drama, truth and beauty. It’s an amazing experience and it’s sad that it happens only occasionally for me because in that moment, I can’t imagine being any happier and content with the universe.

I don’t normally write about the music I listen too. I have a rather eclectic taste in music that some would consider unusual and so I just don’t normally share that part of me online. That being said, the other day I heard this song titled “The Honest Truth” by a band called Typhoon. Wow, what a song. Completely unusual with a blend of sound, vocals and lyrics that can only be described as powerfully soulful. Since I heard it I’ve been on a search to find more songs by this amazing group and then I found a web app called Grooveshark. You should give GrooveShark a try. It’s free to join and I was really surprised at how many Typhoon songs I could find on it. Awesome!

I suggest you give Typhoon a listen. Try to imagine a band with twelve members who actually make good use of a twelve member band. The sound is truly something special and it’s a perfect backdrop for relaxation and introspective thought.
